In Qimen, the Day Stem (日干) represents me, the person asking the question. The Hour Stem (时干) represents the matter itself, in this case, the apartment and the deposit decision.
My Day Stem (乙) falls in Palace 8 (Gen/艮). The Hour Stem falls in Palace 2 (Kun/坤). These two palaces sit on opposite corners of the grid, a direct clash.
Three symbols stacked in my palace, and all three are bad news:
Black Tortoise (玄武), the deity of deception, concealment, and unclear information. Someone is not telling the whole truth.
the Bandit Star (天蓬), the most inauspicious star in the entire system. Risk, danger, hidden traps.
Death Door (死门), the most inauspicious door. Blockage, dead end, do-not-proceed.
When I saw this combination, I didn't need to read much further. It was, as I put it to myself at the time: "Every bad signal in the book showed up and threw a party in my palace."
The matter itself, the apartment, sits in Palace 2 with Téngshé (腾蛇), the Serpent deity.Téngshé is the symbol of entanglement, hesitation, and things that wrap around you and won't let go. It makes you second-guess yourself, waver back and forth, unable to commit or walk away, exactly the mental state the salesman was trying to exploit.
Worse: Palace 2 is in Void (空亡). In Qimen, void means the matter is hollow: it looks real on the surface but has no substance underneath. The promise of "you can always get the deposit back" was, according to the chart, literally empty.
And the two palaces, me in Palace 8, the matter in Palace 2, are in direct opposition. Both are Earth palaces, seemingly compatible, but they sit across the grid from each other: a structural clash. Person and matter are pulling in opposite directions.
I walked back into the main hall with the chart still in my hand, a piece of paper with a nine-palace grid and cryptic text scribbled across it. I looked the salesman in the eye and said firmly: "I'm sorry, I'm not buying this apartment."
He could tell my entire demeanor had changed. He tried to push back, but then glanced down at the paper , the nine-palace grid, the strange symbols. He stopped mid-sentence, stared at it, and said with a mix of awe and disbelief: "Wow, is this…?"
We walked out.
My palace: Black Tortoise (deception) + Bandit Star (the worst star) + Death Door (dead end), every major danger signal converging on one spot. The matter's palace: Serpent (entanglement) + Void (hollow), the deal itself has no substance. The two palaces in direct opposition, person and matter pulling apart.
The chart gave the clearest possible "do not proceed" signal: the information you're being given is incomplete, the risk is real, and this is not your path. I didn't need the chart to tell me which apartment to buy instead. I just needed it to tell me not this one, not now, and it did, in five minutes.
