Two Different Questions两种不同的问题
Ask a BaZi master and a Qimen practitioner for help with the same decision, and notice what each one requests. The BaZi reader wants your birth date and time. The Qimen practitioner wants to know when you asked. That difference is not procedural; it is the entire philosophy. BaZi reads the pattern you were born with; Qimen reads the moment you are standing in.

The two systems are constantly confused because they grew from the same roots: both are built on the ten heavenly stems, twelve earthly branches and the five elements, and both were refined over the same thousand-plus years of Chinese metaphysics. But shared vocabulary is not shared purpose. BaZi (八字, "eight characters," also called Four Pillars of Destiny) is a life-reading system. Qimen Dunjia is a decision-reading system. Most disappointments with either tool come from asking it the other one's question.

How Each System Works两套体系如何运作

A metaphor practitioners use: BaZi is the map of your terrain; Qimen is the weather report for today's journey. The map tells you that you are a valley person or a mountain person — useful for choosing where to live your life. The weather report tells you whether to set out this morning or wait for the storm to pass — useful for the trip in front of you.

The cleanest test is to write your question down and check which system it belongs to. Identity and life-arc questions belong to BaZi; action and timing questions belong to Qimen:

Notice that both systems can receive the word "career" or "relationship"; the deciding factor is never the topic, but the shape of the question. "Why am I like this" is a map question. "What do I do about Tuesday" is a weather question.

Using Them Together配合使用
Serious practitioners rarely treat this as a rivalry, because the two systems occupy different altitudes: BaZi for strategy, Qimen for tactics. A classic combined workflow: your BaZi says the coming years favor partnership over solo ventures; that is direction. Then, when an actual co-founder offer lands on your desk, a Qimen chart for that specific question tells you how this deal, this person, this month actually looks; that is execution.
