The Relationship Signals: Who Is Who on the Chart
A relationship chart is the only kind of Qimen reading with two protagonists. Career charts pit you against circumstances; relationship charts place two people on the same grid and read the space between them. That makes the first step non-negotiable: before judging anything, you must know which symbols carry you, which carry them, and which carry the bond itself.
| Symbol | What it stands for in a relationship chart |
|---|---|
| 日干Day Stem | You: your position, state and strength in the relationship. |
| 时干Hour Stem | The other person: in relationship charts, the matter you're asking about wears their face. |
| 六合Partner deity | The bond itself: intimacy, agreements, the "us" between two people. |
| 乙 / 庚The marriage stems | In commitment questions, tradition reads Yi for the wife's side and Geng for the husband's; their palaces show each partner's condition. |
| 玄武 / 腾蛇Warning deities | Concealment and entanglement: the two classic relationship pathologies the chart flags first. |
The grammar is the same relational reading used everywhere in Qimen: how does your palace treat theirs, and theirs treat yours? Mutual generation reads as energy flowing both ways. One-way generation reads as one person carrying the relationship. Mutual control reads as friction built into the frame, workable but never free.
How Relationship Charts Are Judged
Classical Qimen lays out a precise judgment sequence for love and marriage charts. Once you see the skeleton, every scenario below becomes a special case of the same logic:
The core judgment. In relationship charts, tradition reads Yi for the woman's side and Geng for the man's side. If their two palaces generate each other or match in element, and the chart carries auspicious doors and formations, the relationship can succeed and the marriage will be happy. If the two palaces clash or control each other, the match is difficult, or the couple will struggle.
The matchmaker. The Partner deity plays a specific role in relationship charts: it represents the go-between, the matchmaker, the mutual friend, or the mediator. Its bias reveals which side it favors: if Partner's palace generates the woman's palace (Yi), the mediator leans toward her. If it generates the man's palace (Geng), the mediator leans toward him.
Reading people from the chart. Each person's palace is a portrait. The doors, stars, deities and formations that accompany Yi reveal the woman's character, appearance, physique and career. The same layers around Geng reveal the man's. This is how a classical practitioner could describe a person they had never met. The chart draws their outline.
For married couples. Once married, the spouse can also be read through the combining stem, the heavenly stem that pairs with your day stem in the classical combination system (Jia-Ji, Yi-Geng, Bing-Xin, Ding-Ren, Wu-Gui). The relationship between these two palaces shows the state of the marriage. For major life decisions like divorce or remarriage, classical texts also check both partners' year fate (年命) palaces for a fuller picture.
In practice, third parties get their own stems: Ding stands for a woman intruding on the relationship, Bing for a man. If either appears prominently, especially near the marriage stems or the Partner, it signals an outside presence in the picture.
Scenario: Is This Relationship Going Somewhere?
The most common relationship question, and the most direct chart: you against them, palace against palace, with the Partner deity as the tiebreaker. When the question sharpens into whether to end it or repair it, Should I Break Up or Stay? works that harder read step by step.
- Your palaces generate each other, energy flows in both directions
- Partner seated with an auspicious door, the bond itself is healthy
- Yi / Bing / Ding in either person's palace, warmth and brightness present
- Both stems in season, both people have capacity for this right now
- The two palaces control each other, friction is structural, not situational
- Black Tortoise in their palace, something is not being disclosed
- Void on the relationship palace, form without substance
- Death Door with Partner, the bond is running on inertia
Scenario: Should We Get Back Together?
Reconciliation charts have one extra trap: the chart must distinguish renewal from entanglement. The deity Serpent marks exactly that difference: attachment that coils rather than connects.
- Their stem still generates your palace, energy still moves toward you
- Life Door with the relationship palace, real capacity for regrowth
- Moon present, quiet goodwill; someone is willing to repair in private
- Your day stem strong, you'd return from strength, not loneliness
- Serpent dominating the chart, entanglement wearing love's clothes
- Void repeating on the bond, the same promise evaporates again
- Their palace controls yours with White Tiger, the old pattern returns with force
- Dispute Door between the two palaces, contact reopens the dispute, not the door
Scenario: Marriage & Long-Term Commitment
Commitment questions activate the oldest layer of relationship reading: the marriage stems. Classical texts read Yi for the wife's side and Geng for the husband's, and the Yi–Geng combination, the two stems meeting, is the chart's traditional image of a workable match. Modern readers apply the same two-stem logic to any committed pair.
- Yi and Geng both well-seated and in relating palaces, the classical marriage signature
- Partner with Rest Door, rest, domestic ease, a bond that can relax
- Both palaces supported by the season, the timing carries you
- Chief Star near your palace, the authorities in your life (family, elders) approve
- Yi or Geng entombed (Entombment), one partner's energy gets buried in this frame
- Black Tortoise near the marriage stems, a hidden factor: a person, a debt, a history
- Punishment Clash in the partnership palace, punishment dynamics built into the structure
- White Tiger pressing either stem, force and pressure where there should be shelter
What Qimen Won't Tell You
An honest limit, stated plainly: a relationship chart reads the conditions between two people at this hour: receptivity, concealment, momentum, timing. It does not measure anyone's worth, it cannot read the other person's heart, and it does not replace the conversation you may be avoiding. A hard chart in March is not a verdict on a person; it is a weather report on a bond, and weather changes because people change.
This is also why practitioners re-ask relationship questions across weeks rather than treating one chart as fate. Use the reading the way you'd use any good counsel: to prepare yourself, never to manage the other person.
A relationship chart doesn't read the other person's heart.
It reads the weather between two people.
The most useful thing a relationship chart offers is rarely the verdict; it's the location of the problem. "The bond is healthy but the timing is weak" and "the timing is fine but something is concealed" call for completely different next steps.
