When we read a breakup question, we look first at Six Harmony, the relationship itself. Strong and with an auspicious gate, the bond still has a foundation; sitting with the Death Gate (Death Door) or on Void, the chart is showing a relationship that exists largely in name. Then the two positions: Yi marks the wife's seat, Geng the husband's. Their palaces in clash is the classic signal of a break, while the two generating each other with Six Harmony well placed usually means the bond can hold. One thing to settle before any of it: Yi and Geng mark positions in the relationship rather than gender. The verdict tends to land between softening (宜缓和) and deciding (宜决断), and plenty of charts show a bond that isn't going anywhere at all. In that case the work is to find where the sticking point actually sits, rather than to reach for a decision.

Yi and Geng Are Positions, Not Genders乙庚是位置，不是男女
Almost every popular account of Qimen and love says Yi is the woman and Geng is the man. Read that way, half of all charts stop making sense. The pair comes from the old formula in which Jia marries his younger sister Yi to Geng, so Yi and Geng arrive already a couple: two ends of one marriage, Yi the wife's end and Geng the husband's. Their first property is that they join.
坊间讲奇门看感情，几乎都说"乙是女方、庚是男方"。照这么读，半数盘面会讲不通。乙庚这一对出自"甲以妹乙妻庚"的典故：甲把妹妹乙嫁与庚。所以乙与庚生来成对，标的是一段婚配关系的两端，乙为妻，庚为夫，二者的第一属性是合。
So which end is you? The Day Stem decides, because it always stands for the person asking. When a woman asks, her Day Stem is herself, Yi is her role in the bond and Geng is the other party, and the three agree. When a man asks, his Day Stem is himself while Geng is his role in the bond; the reading then runs primarily on Day Stem against Yi, the direct interaction between him and her, with Geng against Yi as a second layer for the spousal roles. And should the Day Stem happen to be Yi or Geng itself, nothing special is required: the Day Stem answers who you are, the stem it joins with answers who the other party is, and the Yi and Geng palaces answer what the relationship is like. Three separate lines that agree of their own accord.

The pair describes no temperament either: Geng is not the forceful one, Yi is not the yielding one. Reading them as gender or as character is how people arrive at a confident conclusion from a chart they have misread.

Before the two of you, read the bond. Six Harmony is the relationship itself, and the gate it occupies describes what that relationship currently is. This one placement carries more weight than anything either party is doing.

Note the last row. Six Harmony with Death Door or on Void points to something heavier than a relationship in trouble: the chart is showing that the thing you're asking whether to save has largely run out, and what's holding it together is habit and arrangement. Charts of this shape are worth a second, careful look rather than a quick verdict, and they are also the ones people most want to argue with.

Classical practice keeps two short lists, and a breakup reading works by checking both rather than only the alarming one. The most common error in reading these charts is collecting the negative signs and stopping there.

Read the two columns together and the useful cases appear in between. A chart with Six Harmony on Fear Door and Yi and Geng clashing, but Hour Stem still generating your Day Stem, says the quarrelling is real and so is the other person's unwillingness to let go. That is a different situation from a bond already sitting on Death Door, and it calls for a different decision.

Classical texts also mark patterns for conflict and harm within a bond, such as Geng controlling Yi alongside White Tiger. We note them here for completeness and leave it at that. If you are being hurt, that is not a question to put to a chart. Your safety is settled outside the nine palaces, by people who can actually help.

One more worth naming, from the trading side of the same craft: when Six Harmony is entombed or on Void, there is deceit somewhere in the arrangement. If the middleman or the framing of the deal feels off, that is the pattern to look for.

If the two of you have already parted, the question changes. Yi and Geng no longer describe a live interaction; they describe what is left of the feeling on each side. We settle it on three factors, in order.

The order matters. Six Harmony on Void with warm Yi and Geng is a common and painful shape: the feeling is real on both sides and the bond itself is gone. Feeling alone doesn't rebuild a relationship, which is the part people most want the chart to be wrong about.

Not by virtue of being a woman, and this is the most common mistake in popular accounts of Qimen and love. Yi and Geng are the two ends of a married pair, Yi the wife's end and Geng the husband's, and which end is yours is settled by the Day Stem rather than by your gender. In practice, when a woman asks, her Day Stem is herself, Yi is her role and Geng is the other party, so the two systems agree. When a man asks, his Day Stem is himself and Geng is his role, and the reading leans on Day Stem against Yi first. If your Day Stem is itself Yi or Geng, the analysis runs exactly the same way.

Because feeling and bond are read separately, and they can part ways. Yi and Geng generating each other says the feeling is still there on both sides. Six Harmony on Void or with Death Door says the relationship itself is gone. Both can be true at once, and it is one of the more painful shapes a chart takes. What it tells you is that affection alone won't rebuild the thing; something has to be rebuilt for the affection to live in.

Six Harmony, the bond itself, and specifically the gate it sits on. Rest Door is harmony, Fear Door quarrels, Delusion Door blockage, Harm Door injury, and Death Door or Void points to a relationship that survives largely in name. Everything the two parties are doing gets read against that state, which is why a chart can indicate that the arguments aren't where the real problem sits, or, less comfortably, that this has been over for a while.

It depends which of the two negative verdicts it is, because they call for opposite things. Hold (宜缓) means the conditions aren't ripe rather than the bond being finished; the chart shows where the sticking point sits, and the work is on that. Stop (宜止) means the road ahead is genuinely poor, and ending it is prudence rather than failure. Reading the two as one is how people leave something repairable, or stay in something that ended long ago.
