A Door Is Only Half the Story
Each of the eight doors carries a fixed reputation — the Open Door is auspicious, the Death Door grim, and so on down the list you'll find in which doors and stars are lucky. But that reputation is only a starting price. The instant a door lands in a palace, the five elements between the two renegotiate it: the palace can lift the door, hold it in check, or grind against it. Classical Qimen calls this negotiation the door's response (八门克应), and it turns four fixed relationships, each of them a five-element move between door and palace.
Every door carries an element — the element of its home palace, where it sits on a still chart. Open and Fright are metal (from 乾 and 兑); Rest is water; Life and Death are earth; Harm and Block are wood; Scenery is fire. Every palace has a fixed element too: water in the north (坎), fire in the south (离), wood in the east (震, 巽), metal in the west (乾, 兑), earth at the corners and center. So when a door leaves home and lands in some other palace, you simply compare the two elements — and only four things can happen.
Take the Death Door. It belongs in 坤, an earth palace, so it is an earth door. Drop it into 坎, the water palace in the north, and earth controls water (土克水): the door attacks the very palace it's standing on. That is pressure (迫). Reverse the attack, and you get control; swap attack for generation, and you get harmony or support. The four have names — pressure (迫), control (制), harmony (和), support (义) — and knowing which one you're looking at tells you whether the door's headline meaning lands in full, comes out muffled, or turns against itself.
The Four Relations at a Glance
Read the grid below as door-versus-palace. The two on the left both turn on control (克) — in one the door controls the palace, in the other the palace controls the door; the two on the right both turn on generation (生) — in one the door generates the palace, in the other the palace generates the door. To see all four at once, the examples below follow a single door — the metal Open Door — into four different palaces, so you can watch one door meet four fates. By outcome: a lucky door does well with harmony or support and underdelivers under pressure, while an unlucky door is calmed by control and made worse by pressure.
Pressure (Door Pressure): Forcing It门迫:逆地形硬推
Of the four, pressure is the one that turns into a warning flag. When the door's element controls the palace's — a wood door on an earth palace, a fire door on a metal palace — the door is "pressed": it can only deliver its promise by force, against the grain of the ground it stands on. The classical rhyme is blunt about the result. Because a pressed palace is also one of the chart's Four Harms, the full list of which doors press which palaces — and what to do about it — lives in that article; here it's enough to place pressure as the harshest of the four relations.
Classical rhyme on door pressure门迫古歌诀Control, Harmony & Support: the Other Three制、和、义:另外三种
Control (制): the palace controls the door. This is pressure's mirror, and much gentler. A lucky door under control loses some of its shine — held back, it can't give its full good. But turn it around: an unlucky door under control is a genuinely useful thing. The palace pins it down, and its harm never gets off the ground. When you want to blunt a difficult door, control is exactly what you hope to see.
Harmony (和): the door generates the palace. Here the door feeds the palace it sits in, moving with the terrain rather than against it. With a lucky door, this is the smoothest reading on the board — cooperation, momentum, things falling into place. Support (义): the palace generates the door. The direction reverses: now the palace resources the door, backing it and supplying it. A lucky door with support is well-provisioned and dependable — less spectacular than harmony, perhaps, but steady. Both are "generating" relations, and both lift a good door rather than draining it.
Two relations turn on control (迫, 制) and two on generation (和, 义). By outcome: a lucky door does best with harmony or support; an unlucky door is quietly helped by control; and pressure is the worst case for either.
In Practice: One Question at the Door
So the working habit is small but decisive. When a door matters to your question — the door on your key palace — don't stop at its headline meaning. Ask one more thing: what is the five-element relation between this door and the palace it sits in? Feed (和 / 义) and a good door delivers in full; control (制) and a bad door is safely muffled; pressure (迫) and even a lucky door is working uphill. The door names the action; the relation tells you how much of it actually happens.
