Classical Qimen judges lost-and-found questions through a systematic framework. The same logic applies whether you are looking for a set of keys or a family member who left without a word:

Step 1: Identify who is who. If you timed the chart by the moment of disappearance, the day stem is the missing person and the hour stem is you. If you are asking the question yourself, the day stem is you and the hour stem is the lost item or person. For specific family relationships, classical texts assign the year stem to elders, the month stem to siblings, and the hour stem to children. Also check the year fate stem when applicable.

If the chart is in reversal (Reversed Yin), things come back. But if the hour stem is void or entombed, recovery is difficult; the item may be gone for good.

Step 3: Read direction and distance. The palace holding the hour stem (or Six Harmony for the initial departure) tells you the compass direction. Whether the relevant stems fall in inner or outer palaces tells you whether to search nearby or far away.

The star sitting with Dark Warrior reveals the thief's profile: a yang star means a male thief, a yin star means a female. A thriving star means a young person; a weak star means someone older.

Missing-person questions carry higher stakes and a richer symbol set. The chart traces a route, from the departure point through intermediate locations to the final resting place, and layers safety indicators on top of the directional reading.

One additional nuance for missing persons: if the person's stem is thriving and they sit with auspicious doors like Open, Rest, Life or Block, the classical interpretation is counterintuitive: it means they are doing well wherever they are, which actually makes them harder to find because they have no reason to surface. Conversely, if their stem is weak and sits with Harm, View, Death or Shock doors, news about them is more likely to arrive and they may be locatable.

Every palace in the nine-palace grid corresponds to a compass direction. When the hour stem falls in a particular palace, that palace's direction tells you where to search. But there is a twist the chart adds that a physical compass cannot: the distinction between Repeating Yin and Reversed Yin changes everything.
